Tobacco, in the Nicotiana rustica strain, grows in Zimbabwe naturally and people have gathered it, dried it and smoked it for centuries. When the Pioneer Column came to this country in 1890 in search of gold and it proved not to be the source of the Queen of Sheba’s fabulous wealth, the new arrivals looked to growing tobacco. The Jesuit fathers at Chishawasha Mission and a handful of settlers started to cultivate it: Mark Lingard of the Agricultural Department imported 15 different varieties from America in 1898.

The Smallholder Commercial production Committee was formed in 1995 with the main objective of improving tobacco production in the Smallholder sector and also to increase grower base.

It consists of the Chairman, secretary and elected members of the committee (councilors) representing growers in the districts who attend quarterly ZTA Council Meetings apart from their regular meetings in the districts. The Councillors help in the implementation of agreed programmes and provide feed back to the growers on any issues in the Industry.

Who we are

Zimbabwe Tobacco Association (ZTA) was formed in 1928; among its objectives it promotes and supports research and training to ensure the continued development and expansion of the flue cured tobacco growing industry. It was responsible for the establishment of the Tobacco Research Board (TRB), along with farmer training organizations such as Blackfordby Agricultural Institute (BAI).
